History of our company

In the commemorative of the Hintertuxer Gletscherbahnen the history of our "cable car family" is told.

Summer 2018

The new children paradise "Almspielerei" at the Eggalm invites the little hikers to discover new adventures. A large play lake and many more attractions offer a lot of adventures. 
In the second summer, Pepis Kinderland will be enriched by two additional attractions. On a large low ropes course you can prove your climbing skills without any danger and it tingles in your stomache by sliding down the new 15 m long tube slide. 

Winter 2017

At the Hintertux Glacier, even the little snow adventurers can enjoy a fun piste since the winter season 2017/18: In the Kidsslope Hintertux in the winter ski resort Sommerberg, the youngest skiers and snowboarders are invited to a fast ride through snow tunnels, a wave track and many other obstacles.

Summer 2017

10-SEATER FINKENBERG I
The 4-seater cable car from 1987 was replaced by a state-of-the-art cable car. The new 10-seater Finkenberg I is unbeatable in terms of passenger comfort. The latest cable car generation of the cable car world market leader Doppelmayr is used. The new showpiece in Finkenberg allows a comfortable access to the Ski & Glacier World Zillertal 3000. The barrier-free access, seat heating and W-Lan on the entire route are just some of the attributes of the new cable car. The new monocable "Finkenberg I" operates at a maximum speed of 6 m / s and transports 2,400 people per hour.

STAFF HOUSE "GLOCKE"
Not only the new 10-seater Finkenberg I was built in Finkenberg, but also a new staff house. In a construction period of 7 months, the existing building and around 5000 m³ of rock were removed and the staff house "Glocke" with 16 housing units was completed. The single-roomed apartments are all equipped with shower, toilet, kitchenette, fridge, TV and W-LAN. There are also underground parking spaces, cellar compartments and a shared laundry room. At the beginning of December 2017, the first employees moved into the new rooms.

PEPIS KINDERLAND IN SUMMMER 

At the mountain station of the Finkenberger Almbahnen, a new summer paradise for children is created, which can already be seen from afar. In the new Pepis Kinderland, an 8 m high playable wooden bear, the Penken-Pepi, welcomes visitors small and large. The inside of the giant Pepi is the ultimate playground for all little explorers. There are many more opportunities for the young hikers around the giant Pepi.

Winter 2016

The winter ski resort Sommerberg will be enriched with the new Funslope Hintertux. The fun course offers ultimate fun on the slopes for all ages.
Children's dreams come true in the new Pepis Kinderland at the Penkenjoch in Finkenberg since December 2016. Learning to ski and having fun off piste is now guaranteed.

Winter 2015

The new 6-seater Lärmstange 2 goes into operation from winter 2015/16 and with it, a completely new lift in the Kaserer Kees area. All 62 seats are heated and equipped with weather protection hoods, guaranteeing all guests a comfortable ascent.
The Flohpark Hintertux is supplemented by two conveyor belts for our smallest guests. Children, beginners and returnees get a feel for the boards that mean the world.
The 4-seater Tuxerjoch is in the truest sense of the word a "hot spot" due to the additionally installed seat heating.

Summer 2014

HINTERTUX GLACIER INNOVATIONS
After focussing investments last year on the hospitality areas with the new Tuxer Fernerhaus, Wirtshaus am Tuxer Ferner service restaurant and the new Spannagelhaus, emphasis this year has been placed on improving comfort.

Sommerberg - Tuxerjoch lift access
The path from the Sommerbergalm to the lifts at Tuxerjoch has been levelled. From autumn 2014, a covered escalator will lead to the entrance to the winter ski resort’s lifts. Particularly for beginners and children, easier access to the slopes facilitates an even better start to the ski day.

SKI- & GLACIER WORLD ZILLERTAL 3000 INNOVATIONS – Rastkogel Ski Resort
All chairlifts have been equipped with “state of the art” heated seats in the sun-drenched ski resort of Rastkogel. After heated seats were added to the 6 seater Lämmerbichl lifts in 2013, they have now been installed on the 6 seater Wanglspitz and 8 seater Horbergjoch chairlifts in Rastkogel. Not only are visitors speedily chauffeured to the top of the slopes, they now have the added luxury of weather protection covers and heated seats.
The Zillertaler Gletscherbahn GmbH & CO KG invests millions every year into the continual improvement and quality of their services.

Summer 2013

The Tuxer Fernerhaus is extended! In addition to the existing self-service restaurant, there will be a service restaurant with 220 seats from autumn 2013.
The old Spannagelhaus is converted into several months of refurbishment and renovation into a cozy restaurant with cottage charm.

December 2011

The 30-year-old double chair lift Gefrorene Wand 3a is replaced by the world's first 10-seat cabin lift with heated seats made by the Doppelmeyr company. It was taken into public use on Dec. 1, 2011.
A top modern 6-seat chair lift with heated seats replaced the 2-seat weather protected chair lift Katzenmoos at the Ski & Glacier world Zillertal 3000 in Finkenberg.

November 2008

The glacierbus family is complete now. The dual-cable glacierbus 1 is taken into service, waiting times therefore are a belong of the past in Hintertux.

April 2008

The 2nd stage of construction (top station and way) for the glacierbus 1 starting. Enlargement of snow-making facilities in the area of Tuxer Fernerhaus.

May 2007

The construction work for modern dual-cable glacierbus 1 from station at the bottom end Hintertux to Sommerbergalm on 2,100 m. Enlargement of the underground car park at the station at the bottom end Hintertux of 60 parking lots. Enlargement of snow-making facilities in the area of Tuxer Fernerhaus.

October 2006

The snow-making facilities in the "Sommerberg" ski region will be completed in the area near the "Tuxerjoch" and equipped with a fully automated snow-making system. A new reservoir with a capacity of 70,000 m³ ensures the water supply. After this year’s construction phase is completed, snow will be made for an additional 8 km of pistes on the Sommerbergalm (equipment is already on hand for the "Ramsmoos" slopes), as well as for 7 km of the valley run ("Schwarze Pfanne"). The new snowmaking equipment features a high-pressure system with more than 100 lances. The most natural design possible will be created for the new reservoir, to make it an attractive addition to the popular Sommerbergalm hiking area in the summer.

October 2005

The Sommerbergalm restaurant was rebuilt during summer as a modern and yet cosy self-service mountain restaurant, featuring large expanses of wood, an open fireplace and magnificent panoramic views of the glacier.

September 2005

The t-bar lift Kaserer 1, built in 1978, has been removed in September 05. The new t-bar lift Kaserer1 is constructed on glacier-ice.

October 2004

In summer 2004 the new Penkenjoch reservoir (Ski- & Glacier world Zillertal 3000) with a capacity of 70,000 m³ was constructed.

December 2003

A new 8-seater panorama-cable car is put into service in Finkenberg instead of the 2-seater chairlift from the middle station. The entrance into the Ski- & Glacier world Zillertal 3000 is now more comfortable than ever.

August 2003

After only 6 months the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn is rebuilt and opened again for the public.

February 2003

The base terminal, a cabin and the ropes of the 'Tiroler Zugspitzbahn' were damaged by a fire.

2002

The Horbergjoch chair lift in the Rastkogel ski area is replaced by an 8-seat chair lift with comfort seats. This 8-seat chair lift is the first in the world to achieve a capacity of 4000 persons/hour.

2001

In the spring, the groundbreaking ceremony is held for the new 'Tux 150' cable car, which will link the two ski areas. This extensive ski area, which is christened Ski & Glacier world Zillertal 3000, is now the largest ski area in the Zillertal.

2000

In December, Zillertaler Gletscherbahn acquires the majority of shares of the Finkenberger Almbahn GmbH & Co KG, thereby taking a significant step in the direction of linking the Rastkogel and Penken ski areas.

2000

On 1 April, the new glacierbus 3, the highest dual-cable continuously circulating tramway in the world, climbs to an elevation of 3250 metres for the first time. The extreme operating conditions for this new funitel tramway placed unusual demands on its designers, engineers and fitters.
4th May: The construction for the new bottom station building in Hintertux with a new underground carpark for about 300 cars begins. At the same time the double chairlift, which was built in 1981, was demolished. With the construction of the new gondola lift 4100 persons / hour can be transported from Hintertux to the Sommerberglift. 
14th November: The govermental concession for the new 8er Sommerberg was placed and on the 17th November the service for the publich transport started.

1996

The most modern cable car in the Alps, the new glacierbus 2, is put into service. Its special technology allows it to be safely operated at wind speeds up to 70 km/h.

1990

The majority of shares of the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn were acquired by the Province of Tyrol, and a new cable car leading from Ehrwald-Obermoos to the 2692-metre summit of the Zugspitze was constructed and put into service in only one year. Besides the cable car, the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn Holiday Park includes a hotel, a restaurant, a block of flats with a water experience playground and a year-round campground. The Ehrwalder Almbahnen family ski area in Ehrwald rounds out the offerings of our company in the Außerfern district of Tyrol.

1984

Development of the Rastkogel ski area in Vorderlanersbach, located on the sunny Lämmerbichl plateau.

1969

To complement the ‘Liftstube’ on the Sommerbergalm (now the Sommerbergalm Restaurant), the Tuxer Fernerhaus, a new, modern self service restaurant with seating for 200 guests, was opened at an elevation of 2660 m.

1968

Construction of the longest single-seat chairlift in Austria (2.5 km long), leading to the Tuxer Fernerhaus. This formed the basis for opening up the glacier skiing area.
Over the years, other links were added to provide access to the current Hintertux Glacier ski area, which boasts 21 modern cable car and lift facilities on an area of 270 ha. With its 90 employees (130 in winter) the Zillertaler Gletscherbahn is an important economic factor in the Zillertal valley and significantly contributes to the upswing of the whole region.

Construction of a single-seat chairlift on the Sommerbergalm.

1964

Zillertaler Gletscherbahn GmbH & Co KG was founded.

1960

Another surface lift was built at the head of the valley. It was dismantled in 1979 and rebuilt on the Sommerbergalm, where it currently operates as the Ramsmoos lift.

1954

The new chair lift was also removed, and despite financial difficulties, the Bichlalm surface lift was build at the edge of Hintertux. For thirty years afterwards, it transported skiers from far and near.

1951

The chair lift was destroyed by an avalanche. A new chair lift with wooden towers was constructed to the northeast of Hintertux, along the edge of the forest.

1949

The company that would later become Zillertaler Gletscherbahn was founded as ‘Schiliftgesellschaft Hintertux’ with the construction of a chair lift.
