As part of the guided tour in cooperation with the Zillertal Nature Park, we immerse ourselves in the world of Zillertal legends and go in search of traces of the “Tux Giant”. We visit legendary sites and follow the giant into the Spannagel cave, which, according to legend, he dug with his own hands. The tour ends on the Panoramic Terrace with a view of the glacier - the giant of snow and ice.
The tour
Meeting
point
Meeting point is at the valley station in Hintertux at the “Naturpark Steinmandl”. After a brief welcome, we take the gondola up the mountain accompanied by a nature park guide. Meanwhile, a well-known Zillertal legend teller takes us into the world of the giant.
Spannagel
Cave
Once you arrive at 2,660 m, you walk to the Spannagel Cave. According to legend, the fearsome giant dug part of the cave with his bare hands.
Largest cave system
in the Central Alps
With a total length of almost 13 km, the Spannagel cave system is the largest cave system in the entire Central Alps and one of the largest in Austria. After a brief introduction, we start our tour through the show cave. Important for the Spannagel Cave: NO CLAUSTROPHOBIA
Past and
present
The end of our tour takes us up to 3,250m. Up here, we return from the world of legends to the present and look down on the giant of snow and ice from the panoramic terrace: the Tux Giant is a metaphor for the glacier itself. Among other things, we learn more about the glacier, the ice and current measures to protect the giant at 3,250m.
