Spannagel Cave natural monument

The Spannagel Cave at the Hintertux Glacier is Europe’s highest altitude publicly accessible cave and a very worthwhile day trip destination for families with children. With a measured length of around 12,5 km it is the largest rock cave system in the Central Alps, 500 metres can be experienced by visitors on a guided tour.

The family friendly Spannagel Cave Natural Monument is an ideal place to visit even in bad weather.

Cave access

The entrance to the Spannagel Cave is around 5 minutes away from the Tuxer Fernerhaus and is accessible by taking the glacierbus lifts 1 and 2.

Guided tours

During the 1 hour tour accompanied by a certified guide, visitors will be taken through this unique labyrinth of marble and sintering, shown geological features such as stalactites, marble seams and glacial pot holes and informed of interesting facts about the cave. And maybe even catch a glimpse of a bat during this underground expedition! As is appropriate for cave explorers of all ages, visitors will be provided with rubber boots, a helmet and raincoat for the tour.

Cave trekking

On request, extensive tours of several hours are available, where cave trekkers are taken even deeper into the complex cave system under the Hintertux Glacier. 
Experience cave courses, which are otherwise only accessible to cave guides. Pass stalagmites, marble, sintering, crystals ... a special experience for brave adventurers.

Panorama Terrace

The Panorama Terrace on the Hintertux Glacier is located at an impressive 3,250 metres above sea level and is easily accessible for both able and disabled persons. From the base station in Hintertux, visitors glide up to the fascinating mountains of Zillertal in comfortable gondolas.
