Nature's Ice Palace

The ice journey begins only 200 m away from the highest point of the Hintertuxer Glacier. A secure path leads from the viewing platform at the Gefrorenen Wand (3.250 m), with one of the most beautiful views over the mountains of Zillertal, to the Palace Gateway. After a safety equipment check (helmet, belt with 2 safety loops) the path leads, using hand rails, through the entire labyrinth which has developed over the years entirely naturally without any human influence whatsoever. The mystical glacial blue vestibule chamber is the first point of the tour, where the turquoise colours provide an amazing visual experience. It only takes natural sunlight for the entire chamber to be bathed in shades of blue, as only blue colour tones are reflected in ice.

Successive crystal chambers are filled with ice crystals in all manners of shape and form. Constant changes in their shape and size are caused by varying moisture levels and changes in temperature. It is fascinating to see how in the coming weeks and months they continue to develop. A distinctive feature of the crystal chambers is the floor, which is actually a frozen glacial lake, forming the path to the blue chamber as well as to the red illuminated ice chapel. The highlight of the tour is then visiting the “Ice Palace” situated around 25 metres directly under the ski pistes. The perfect ice formations in this palace, with an awe inspiring height of 15 metres, will simply take your breath away! Is there a more creative architect than Mother Nature?

Younger glacier visitors, children from the age of 8 years (accompanied by an adult) will be especially interested in this natural phenomenon. Specialist climbing skills are not necessary for this tour, which can be easily made in your ski boots. The team from Roman Erler, Natursport Tirol will be there to help and expertly guide you around, as well as providing interesting facts and information on the subject of "glaciology".
