A fascinating natural attraction for young and old has to be a guided tour through the Spannagel Caves. Experience at first hand the distinctive geological characteristics of layers of ice sheets way under the Tyrolean glacier. The Spannagel Caves currently measure over 10km long and are the largest rock caves in the entire Central Alps, as well as being the highest caves open to the public in Europe.
Approximately 500 metres of these high alpine caves have been officially approved for guided tours, where you can learn interesting facts about the caves’ interior and their composition of marble, calcareous deposits, stalactites and stalagmites, crystals, marble seams and potholes. Budding geologists can also find out more about the age, origins and formation of these caves, their climate and vegetation.
Tours of the caves with a qualified guide take place daily from 10.00a.m., and take approx. 1 hour. (Helmet, jacket and wellington boots are supplied).
Directions: Take the 8 seater Sommerberg lift and the Gletscherbus 2 to the Tuxer Fernerhaus at 2660 metres. From there, it’s a short walk (approx. 5 mins) to the Spannagelhaus. Lift prices are: € 17,00 for adults, € 12,00 for children, children up to the age of 10 accompanied by their parents go free!
